Our nation lost many lives today
Several thousand, broadcasters say.
Eyewitnesses to such great tragedy
On screens for all the world to see.
Mortified by the shocking, horrific loss
As planes burned, family lives were tossed.
American hearts so much did yearn
For God or fate to reverse the turn,
And for the families we grieved and cried
Tears shed for this nation of great pride.
The smoldering vision will never cease.
Visible patriotism now on the increase
For when buildings collapse, loved ones inside
We begin a war that will not subside.
For innocent people who have died
Bond us together, and we won't abide
By acts of terrorism like none before
Striking the world to its very core.
Because our losses were truly dear
Our mission becomes so crystal clear --
Defend our nation and the world.
The eagle soars, our flag unfurled.
